Custom Home Landscaping: Hardscaping vs Softscaping

Phil Myers - Tuesday, July 12, 2016

As you start thinking about your custom home project, it’s important to keep in mind your home’s landscaping. While you may not have thought about custom home landscaping before, it’s crucial to the project because it really is the finishing touch to your dream home. While the little details on the inside are being finished, your custom home builder will work with landscapers to create the yard that best compliments your home. Custom home landscaping is all about creating the yard that your family will use and love.

Hardscaping

Hardscaping is great for those who are looking for a more maintenance free type of landscaping. Hardscaping includes things like sidewalks, patios, decks, built-in fireplaces, pools, and rock features. While every house has some sort of hardscaping, there is a lot you can do with hardscaping to make your yard a great place to spend time. Whether it’s an outdoor kitchen to entertain with, a pool for the kids to play in, or a stone path leading to your built-in firepit, hardscaping gives you plenty of options to enjoy your yard and worry less about taking care of plants.

Softscaping

Softscaping is great for those looking for a yard full of plant life. From native grasses to trees and shrubs, softscaping is a way to compliment your home with landscaping and create a backyard oasis. Imagine strolling through your own flower garden or enjoying the sound of the cool summer breeze blowing through your trees and tall native grasses. Whatever type of plant you enjoy, softscaping is a way for you to add natural decoration to the outside of your home, but it will, typically, require you to spend more time or money maintaining the landscaping.

Combined Custom Home Landscaping

For those looking for a more combined landscaping appeal, use both hardscaping and softscaping. Instead of laying a concrete walkway from your patio to your firepit, consider using flagstones with a soft grass growing between the stones. If you really want a flower garden, consider using a black iron fence to surround and contain the garden and using gravel to make your walkways through the garden. Combining the two types of landscaping will give you a much more aesthetic and pleasing look with your custom home’s landscaping.
