Custom Home Builder Indianapolis: Designing A Farmhouse Kitchen

Phil Myers - Friday, November 11, 2016

Farmhouse kitchens are one of the most popular kitchen ideas for custom homes right now. They feature large sinks, open concepts, butcher block counters, and glass fronted cabinets. It’s easy to see how and why these kitchens are so popular, but getting the authentic feeling you want from your kitchen may not be as simple as you think it is.

Here are a few reasons to consider having your custom home builder Indianapolis design a farmhouse kitchen for you:

  • A farmhouse kitchen is a great place for home cooks to practice their skills and impress guests with their culinary expertise because these kitchens are usually larger, act as a focal point for the house, and are easy to entertain in.
  • The farmhouse kitchen look is trending right now, but it’s also a classic look that hasn’t ever truly gone out of style, so if you’re worried about it seeming dated in the future, understand that this look isn’t going away anytime soon.
  • The farmhouse kitchen is all about looking rustic and a little worn, which is great for kitchens because you don’t have to worry about little dings to cabinets or small paint scrapes.

Sound like it would look great in your custom home? Here are a few features to include:

  • The deep farmhouse sink is a must. You can’t complete this look for your kitchen without a deep farmhouse sink. Whether you choose a classic white porcelain sink, a metal sink, or something in between, you’ll have plenty of space to do dishes and keep the kitchen clean.
  • White painted cabinets are simple and elegant. Part of the charm of a farmhouse kitchen is the simplicity of the style. By painting your cabinets white, you don’t have to worry as much about matching your decor to the stain of your cabinets. White is easy to match and you can really make the kitchen pop by adding bright accent colors.
  • Wooden countertops are rustic, durable, and much warmer than stone. Butcher block counters are great because they are so versatile. Use them as a cutting board, clean up the mess, and don’t worry about scratching the surface. Part of the charm of this style of kitchen is imperfections in the detail.
  • Workhorse islands that do more than just provide another counter are the center of these kitchens. A farmhouse kitchen is the central part of the house and the central part of the kitchen is a sturdy kitchen island. A workhorse island is great for prepping dinners, completing homework assignments, eating breakfast, and anything else you can think of.
  • Glass front cabinets show off your favorite serving ware and decor. Do you have a favorite china set? Maybe you’re looking for a way to add more color to your kitchen. Either way, glass front cabinets make the kitchen feel lighter and are great for showing off china or other decor pieces.
  • Farmhouse table where the whole family can sit down to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner together. A farmhouse kitchen isn’t complete without a farmhouse table. Round or rectangular, these tables are rustic, often built with reclaimed wood, and offer plenty of surface space for the whole family to gather around.

A farmhouse kitchen is a great look even for a modern home and achieving the style doesn’t need to be complicated. Once you have the basics down from the list above, you can really play around with the look by adding in touches of your favorite colors, dishes, metal decor, and whatever else you think should go in your farmhouse kitchen!
