Creating Privacy for Backyard Living Areas

Phil Myers - Friday, February 10, 2017

Backyard living spaces are all the rage. Everything from rustic and elaborate fire pits to complete outdoor living rooms with a TV and fireplace are popping up in backyards. If you’re thinking about creating one of these spaces in your custom home backyard, then you’ll also need to consider your privacy options. It isn’t fun to entertain friends in your outdoor living room while your neighbors peer over at you every 10 minutes. Creating a sense of privacy in these areas is easily accomplished with one of these options:

Large Plants

If you’re looking for a way to create privacy, but want to avoid the aesthetics a fence or wall provide, large plants are perfect. Instead of using a hard material like wood, metal, or stone, use shrubbery to create privacy in your backyard living area. Large shrubs give a great, natural backdrop to your yard or outdoor living area.

Layered Planting

Want something with a little more depth than just a wall of shrubbery? Layering plants gives you a similar natural look and feel, but adds even more aesthetics. Going the layered planting route allows you to add color to your outdoor area while still creating a sense of privacy. Mix perennials with deciduous trees and tall grasses to get the look you want.

Fences

If you’re looking for a more traditional look for your backyard living area, consider fences. Everything from wooden fences to chain link to metal rail fences can give you a great look while adding privacy. Whatever style of fencing you choose, make sure it complements the space and doesn’t distract from your backyard living area.

Stone and Brick Walls

If your backyard is all about the rustic look and uses natural materials like stone and brick, why not create a fence that matches? For outdoor living areas that include fire pits and outdoor living rooms, the stone and brick walls not only make for a great compliment, but help guarantee your privacy.

Creating privacy in your backyard living area should be about what completes the space. If your yard is taken up mostly by an outdoor living room, then using natural elements like plants for your privacy may help soften up the space. No matter the route you take, choose a privacy option that you love.
